Wild Animal Initiative receives $6 million grant

July 20, 2023

Wild Animal Initiative received $6 million in funding from grantmaker Open Philanthropy to support our Grants Program and general operations. With these funds, Wild Animal Initiative can continue to build on our success over the past two years supporting scientific research on wild animal welfare. Since 2021, our Grants Program has disbursed more than $1.3 million across 42 projects that focus on a range of topics related to wild animal welfare science. We’re thrilled to share that we plan to continue this work over the next three years.

For scientists interested in applying for research funding from Wild Animal Initiative, we currently have a call for proposals open. Grantees are eligible for up to $30,000 in funding through our Seed Grants Program, which provides small amounts of funding to facilitate projects ideal for early-career scientists or more established principal investigators who have no previous experience with wild animal welfare research. Expressions of interest are due Aug. 4, and we aim to share final funding decisions in early 2024.

Our Grants Program is made possible through the support of Open Philanthropy, a grantmaking organization which aims to use its resources to help others as much as it can.
