Wild Animal Welfare and Animal Behavior Workshop: A Global South Perspective
August 25 - 30, 2025 | Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, New Town, India
Join us for a workshop at Behaviour 2025 exploring the intersection between behavioral sciences and welfare research in wild animals, with a specific focus on research from the Global South.
We will discuss the emerging field of wild animal welfare science, how behavioral measures can serve as indicators of welfare, how the integration of welfare considerations can enhance the quality and interpretability of behavioral and ecological studies, and the challenges of translating captive research to wild settings, particularly in the Global South.
Speakers include Akshay Bharadwaj who is using mixed-species flock behaviour to assess welfare of wild birds in the eastern Himalaya, Dr. Ratna Ghosal and Dr. Maria Thaker who are experienced researchers using physiological markers for welfare assessment of species ranging from fish to the Asian elephant, and representatives from Wild Animal Initiative, who will reflect on survey results from over 180 behavioural scientists on the opportunities and challenges of integrating welfare into research.
Specific date, time, and location details to be confirmed.
