History

Wild Animal Initiative was founded in 2019 with the merger of Utility Farm (founded 2016 by Abraham Rowe) and Wild-Animal Suffering Research (founded 2017 by Persis Eskander). In the merger, UF acquired WASR’s funds, WASR’s remaining staff left for other reasons, and UF legally changed its name to Wild Animal Initiative.

Wild Animal Initiative took a different direction than the preceding organizations, choosing to focus on supporting academic research.

In 2020, 2021, and 2022, Animal Charity Evaluators named Wild Animal Initiative a Top Charity.
