The goal of our grants program is to fund research that deepens scientific knowledge of the welfare of wild animals in order to better understand how to improve the welfare of as many wild animals as possible, regardless of what causes the threats to their well-being.
We showcase our grantees and their projects here and will be adding more in the coming weeks and months.
Characterization of fecal oxytocin and immunoglobulin A in lions (Panthera leo): Exploring a multi-biomarker approach in animal welfare research

This project will validate the measurement of oxytocin (OT) and secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA), markers of neuroendocrine and immune function, as biomarkers of wild animals’ welfare states. Both indicators have been measured in the saliva and urine of a limited set of wild mammalian species, but work on their analysis in fecal samples has been even more limited. This project will validate the measurement of OT and IgA in the feces of lions as a model for social carnivores, and evaluate their applicability as additional physiological indicators in wild animal welfare studies. The researchers will evaluate baseline levels for the species based on a small number of captive individuals and assess how these biomarkers are correlated with GCs and behavior.

Project summary
Glucocorticoids (GCs) remain the most common physiological indicators of stress and, by extension, of animal welfare. However, welfare means more than stress, and therefore there is a need to develop complementary biomarkers to expand our knowledge of animals’ overall welfare states, both positive and negative. This project will consider oxytocin (OT) and secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA), markers of neuroendocrine and immune function respectively, which have been proposed as potential indicators of positive affective states. So far, both indicators have been reliably measured in the saliva and urine of a limited set of wild mammalian species. However, previous work on their analysis in fecal samples has been even more limited. This project aims to validate the measurement of OT and IgA in feces of lions (Panthera leo) as a model for social carnivores and evaluate their applicability as additional physiological indicators in wildlife welfare studies. Why we funded this project
With a multi-biomarker approach, these potential biomarkers, in combination with GCs, will enable a more robust interpretation of findings in welfare assessments. We are especially interested in the potential for these physiological indicators to support identification of positive welfare states in wild animals, considering the crucial role of oxytocin, for example, in social bonding. Although the project itself is limited to a small number of captive individuals, we expect that this project will represent a significant step towards validating these putative indicators of positive welfare thanks to the detailed behavioral monitoring that the captive environment allows, including a Quantitative Behavioral Assessment (QBA) approach.

Investigating ways to assess and improve the welfare of leopards captured in response to conflict, in Nepal

In Nepal, the successful recovery of tiger populations is displacing leopards from protected parks and forcing them into urban areas. This has caused an increase in conflict with people and farmed animals. Organizations responding to conflicts have limited resources and must attempt to balance animal welfare and conservation aims with public safety and sociopolitical demands. This has resulted in an ad hoc approach, with frequent interventions but little opportunity to evaluate their success. This project will focus on validating non-invasive post-release monitoring techniques, including photogrammetric assessment of body condition and measurement of hair cortisol from fecal samples, to monitor the welfare impact of translocation of leopards away from conflict areas.

Leopards are the most widespread and adaptable of the world’s big cats, occupying a wide variety of habitats ranging from remote rainforests to busy urban centers. In Nepal, the successful recovery of tiger populations is displacing leopards from protected parks and forcing them into more populated areas. Low densities of natural prey in these areas, coupled with an abundance of easily hunted feral dogs around settlements, have resulted in leopards colonizing urban and suburban environments. This has caused an increase in conflict with people, including the predation of farmed animals and occasional human attacks. Organizations responding to conflict events have limited resources and must attempt to balance animal welfare and conservation aims with public safety and sociopolitical demands. This has resulted in an ad hoc approach, with frequent interventions, but little to no opportunity to reflect and evaluate the impact or success of these actions. This project will focus on validating entirely non-invasive post-release monitoring techniques, including photogrammetric assessment of body condition and measurement of hair cortisol from fecal samples, to monitor the impact of translocation of leopards away from conflict areas on their health and welfare.
Why we funded this project
We funded this project because it addresses two of our research priorities by seeking to validate non-invasive monitoring techniques, including hair cortisol as a measurement of chronic stress (which may be more informative of welfare than short-term measures of stress physiology). Although it focuses on leopards, the validation of these methods should be transferable to other species. The researcher, Jess Bodgener, also seems to have a long-term interest in wild animal welfare, and has genuine partnerships in place to build capacity and regard for wild animal welfare in Nepal.
Drivers of welfare in American pikas (Ochotona princeps)

Declines are most prominent in isolated mountain ranges with limited high-elevation habitat, like the La Sals, where pikas are consequently likely to experience lower welfare. This project will assess the welfare of pikas in the La Sals through patterns of survival, population demographics, physiological stress, body condition, ectoparasite load, and hydration. The researchers will also test hypotheses correlating these indicators to habitat quality, and investigate resource competition between pikas and mountain goats.

Project summary
Due to recent population losses and range retractions, pikas (Ochotona princeps) are considered a sentinel for climate change in the alpine. However, declines are most prominent in isolated mountain ranges with limited high-elevation habitat, like the La Sals. Surrounded by low-elevation desert in all directions, pikas in the La Sals are likely to experience lower aggregate welfare (i.e., steeper population declines, greater physiological stress, and lower survivorship). This project will assess the welfare of pikas in the La Sals through patterns of survival, population demographics, physiological stress (fecal glucocorticoid metabolites; FGM), body condition, ectoparasite load, and hydration. The researchers will also test hypotheses correlating these welfare indicators to aspects of habitat quality. Finally, they will also investigate resource competition between pikas and mountain goats as another potential factor in pika welfare.
Why we funded this project
This project addresses our research priority of understanding the welfare implications of competition and other conflicts of interest between wild animals. It also focuses on a highly numerous species, the American pika. In that context, we appreciate that this project will model habitat quality on the spatial scale relevant to individual pika when assessing its association with their welfare. Finally, we value that they will use a wide variety of welfare indicators, representing the domains of physiology, behavior, and environment/demography, with each strengthening interpretation of the other.
